The deeper the loss, the disproportionately larger the recovery it takes.
The formula is gain = loss ÷ (100 − loss). Fees and taxes are not included.
Frequently asked questions
How is the new average price calculated?
New average = (existing shares × existing average + added shares × added price) ÷ (existing + added shares). It is a plain weighted mean, so the average drifts toward whichever side holds more shares. Hold 100 at 10,000 and buy 100 more at 7,000 and the average lands at 8,500.
How many shares do I need to reach a target average?
Enter the figure under Reach a target average and the required quantity and cost appear immediately. The formula is added shares = held shares × (current average − target) ÷ (target − purchase price). Two things to watch: the cost climbs steeply as the target drops, and the average can never go below the price you are buying at.
How much does the price need to rise to break even?
Always more than you lost. The gain required is loss ÷ (100 − loss), so −10% needs +11.1%, −30% needs +42.9%, −50% needs +100% and −70% needs +233%. The table above lays it out, and entering a current price highlights your own figure.
Are fees and taxes included?
No. This is a plain weighted average with no brokerage commission or transaction tax. Your real break-even price is a little higher than the number shown. Rates differ by broker, market and year, so check your own broker for exact figures.
Where are saved positions stored?
Only in your own browser — nothing is sent to a server and no sign-in is needed. Up to five positions fit. Clearing your browser data or using private browsing removes them, and they do not follow you to another device.
