Covered is not the same as removed

When you lay a black box over a PDF annotation or a slide shape, moving that shape or extracting the text can reveal what was underneath. This tool redraws the image onto a canvas before exporting, so the original pixels in the hidden area are gone for good.

Mosaic and blur behave differently. They reduce the information rather than remove it, so targets with few possibilities, such as digits, can be the subject of recovery attempts. For ID numbers, account numbers, and phone numbers, fill is the safer choice.

Photos taken with a phone often carry location and device data (EXIF). Saving through this tool re-encodes the image, so that data disappears as well. Everything is processed inside your browser and the image is never uploaded.

What to hide and what to leave visible

The most common mistake on a submitted copy is hiding too much. Cover the name and date of birth as well and the recipient cannot verify who you are, so the document comes back. Masking is not about erasing information; it is about leaving exactly what the check requires. The rows below reflect common Korean practice, and the final call always belongs to whoever receives the document.

DocumentUsually hidden
National ID cardThe second half of the resident registration number. Some recipients ask you to leave the first digit, which indicates gender.
Driver licenseThe second half of the ID number and the licence number.
PassportPassport number and the second half of the ID number. The photo and the romanised name stay, since they are what gets matched.
Residence registration extractThe ID numbers of other household members. If the purpose is to verify you alone, ask whether the household section can be hidden entirely.
Credit or debit card copyThe middle digits of the card number and the CVC on the back. Hide the expiry date too if it is not needed.
Bank passbook copyOften nothing needs hiding. The account holder and account number are the point of the document, so leave them. If transactions are visible, cover only those lines.

Issue date and issuing authority vary by recipient. Some want them left for authenticity checks, others treat them as unnecessary. If the instructions do not say, asking is faster than guessing. This is not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can the hidden parts be recovered later?

Not from the saved file. Areas hidden with fill are exported with the original pixels already erased. Your original file still exists, though, so keeping the original next to the redacted copy can still leak the information.

Is mosaic good enough?

For faces or backgrounds, where a rough cover is fine, yes. But for fixed-length digits such as ID numbers, account numbers, or phone numbers, the small number of possibilities makes recovery attempts realistic. Use fill for those.

How much of an ID card should I hide?

It depends on who is asking. Many places want part of the ID number covered, while others also ask for the issue date or address. Check the instructions from the party requesting it. This tool does not find anything for you, so select the areas yourself and review the result. (This is not legal advice.)

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. Reading, hiding, and saving all happen inside your browser. It even works with your connection turned off.

Is the location data in my photo removed too?

Yes. Saving re-encodes the image, so the location and device data stored in EXIF disappears with it. Uploading a phone photo as-is can expose where it was taken; going through this tool clears that.
