The values you actually have to decide
A signature matters less for how it looks than for whether you can produce it the same way next time. Strokes that are too elaborate are hard even for you to repeat, which works against you when the image is compared with something you signed by hand.
Set the stroke a little heavier than looks right on screen. Once placed in a document it shrinks to fit the signature line, and thin strokes break up when that is printed or sent through a fax.
Size follows the width of the signature line, usually somewhere between 40 and 60mm. Printed at 300dpi that works out to roughly 472 and 709 pixels. The formula is pixels = mm / 25.4 x dpi.
Black is the safe colour, though dark blue is also used; the blue convention comes from telling an original apart from a photocopy. Always save on a transparent background, because a white one puts a pale rectangle over whatever text sits beneath the signature.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this signature image on a contract?
For ordinary documents that both parties agree on, an image signature is widely used in practice. But documents whose form is fixed by law — notarised deeds, property registration, or anything requiring a certified seal — may need a registered seal or a qualified electronic signature instead. For anything important, ask the other party or the receiving office which formats they accept. (This is not legal advice.)
How do I put it into a PDF or Word file?
Save it as a PNG with the background set to “transparent”. In a PDF editor, use the image-insert or signature tool. In Word or Google Docs, insert it as a picture and set text wrapping to “behind text” so it sits neatly over the signature line. A white background saves a visible white box that covers the document, so transparent is usually the better choice.
Should I draw my signature or type it?
Drawing keeps your own handwriting, and it looks far more natural on a phone or tablet with a finger or stylus than with a mouse. Typing only needs your name and renders it in a handwriting font — fast, and identical every time. Try both and keep whichever you prefer.
The preview looks white. Is the background really transparent?
Yes. The preview is drawn on a white board so it is easy to see. When you save with “transparent”, the PNG itself has no background, so whatever sits underneath shows through. Drop it onto a coloured background if you want to confirm.
Is my name or signature sent to a server?
No. Drawing, font rendering and saving all happen inside your browser. The saved PNG is still a file, though — on a shared computer, delete it afterwards and avoid emailing or messaging it around.
